Timbuktu is a city in the Saharan region of northern Mali, situated near the Niger River. It was a centre of Islamic scholarship and trade from the 13th to 17th centuries, renowned for its Sankore University and three great mosques (Djinguereber, Sankore, and Sidi Yahia), all UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1988. At its height under the Songhai Empire, Timbuktu was home to some 25,000 students and housed one of the world's largest collections of manuscripts. The Ahmed Baba Institute preserves hundreds of thousands of medieval manuscripts today. While tourism declined after security concerns in the 2010s, the city remains an icon of African intellectual heritage.
