Stone Town is the old city of Zanzibar City on the island of Unguja (Zanzibar), Tanzania. It was a major trading port across the Indian Ocean for centuries and shows a fusion of Arab, Persian, Indian, African and European architectural and cultural elements. The town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. Its narrow streets, ornately carved wooden doors, mosques, palaces and the Old Fort attract many visitors. The town was also a major hub of the East African slave trade in the 19th century, and the former slave market site is now a memorial.
