The Simien Mountains are a rugged volcanic range in northern Ethiopia, often called the "Roof of Africa". Simien Mountains National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978 for its dramatic landscape and the endemic species it protects, including the gelada baboon, walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf. Trekking, often with local Scoutscouts, is the main visitor activity.
