Audience:Travellers, ecologists, wildlife enthusiasts
The Okavango Delta is the world's largest inland delta, formed where the Okavango River empties into the Kalahari Desert in northwestern Botswana. Covering up to 22,000 km² during seasonal floods, it supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife including African elephants, hippos, Nile crocodiles, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and over 400 bird species. The delta was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The seasonal flood cycle — peaking between June and August — transforms the landscape from semi-arid savanna into a lush wetland, attracting wildlife migrations. Mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris offer a unique wildlife-viewing experience.
