Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano in northern Tanzania and at 5,895 metres it is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain in the world. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo (which contains the summit Uhuru Peak), Mawenzi and Shira. Kilimanjaro National Park, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987, surrounds the mountain. Tens of thousands of climbers attempt the summit each year, most via the Marangu, Machame, Rongai or Lemosho routes.
