Lake Volta is one of the largest reservoirs by surface area in the world, covering approximately 8,500 square kilometres (about 3,275 sq mi), which is about 3.6 percent of the area of Ghana. The lake provides hydroelectric power, freshwater fishing, ferry transport and tourism. The port of Akosombo is the southern end of the lake; the northern end reaches the town of Yapei near Tamale.
