Goree (Goree Island, French: Ile de Goree) is a small island off the coast of Dakar, Senegal. From the 15th to the 19th century it was one of the largest slave-trading centres on the West African coast and was controlled successively by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French. The Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) and its "Door of No Return" are central to the islands memory. Goree was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978 as a memorial of the Atlantic slave trade.
