The Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is a wetland reserve in northern Senegal, near the Mauritanian border on the southern bank of the Senegal River. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981. The 16,000-hectare site hosts approximately 1.5 million birds annually, including white pelicans, purple herons, African spoonbills and many trans-Saharan migrants. It is regarded as one of the worlds top bird sanctuaries and a critical stop on the East Atlantic flyway.
