The Bandiagara Escarpment is a sandstone cliff stretching about 150 km in the Dogon Country of central Mali. It rises up to 500 metres above the sandy plain below. The escarpment and surrounding plateau are home to the Dogon people, known for their rich cosmological traditions, elaborate mask ceremonies, and cliff-dwelling architecture. Hundreds of villages cling to the cliff face and its base, with granaries, dwellings and sacred sites. The area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989 as a mixed cultural and natural landscape. Toguna (men's meeting houses) and ceremonial dances like the Dama funeral rites draw researchers and visitors from around the world.
