Mental health refers to a state of well-being in which an individual realises their abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to the community. Mental health is more than the absence of mental illness; it covers emotional, psychological and social well-being and influences how people think, feel and act. Common mental disorders include depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia. Stigma and limited access to trained professionals are major barriers to care across many African countries. People experiencing mental-health difficulties should seek help from a trained professional. Information on this page is general reference only.
