Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, is a long-term medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. It is usually defined as a systolic reading of 140 mm Hg or higher, or a diastolic reading of 90 mm Hg or higher, taken on at least two separate occasions. Hypertension often has no symptoms but is a major risk factor for stroke, heart attack, heart failure, chronic kidney disease and visual impairment. Management includes weight control, reduced salt intake, regular physical activity, limiting alcohol, stopping smoking and, where indicated by a clinician, antihypertensive medication.
