Local government in Ghana is structured under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). The country is divided into 16 administrative regions, each subdivided into Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs). Each MMDA is led by an elected Assembly, with the executive functions performed by a Chief Executive (MCE/MMCE/DCE) who is nominated by the President and approved by the Assembly. MMDAs are further subdivided into Sub-Metropolitan, Urban, Zonal, Town and Area Councils, and Unit Committees at the grassroots level. Local government is responsible for development planning, basic infrastructure, sanitation and local revenue mobilisation in its area.
