The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is the body charged with overseeing elections in Nigeria. It was established by Section 153 of the 1999 Constitution. INEC organises elections for the President, National Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives), State Houses of Assembly and State Governors, and registers and regulates political parties. Voter registration is a continuous process: eligible Nigerians aged 18 and above can register at any INEC office or designated centre and receive a Permanent Voters Card (PVC), which is required to vote on election day. The Commissions chairman and national commissioners are appointed by the President subject to Senate confirmation.
