The University of Cape Town (UCT) is the oldest university in South Africa, founded in 1829 as the South African College and granted full university status in 1918. Located on the slopes of Devil's Peak overlooking Cape Town, it is consistently ranked as Africa's leading university in global rankings (QS, THE). UCT has six faculties including Health Sciences, Engineering, Law, Science, Humanities and Commerce. Notable alumni include four Nobel laureates: Max Theiler, Allan Cormack, J. M. Coetzee and Aaron Klug. UCT enrols roughly 29,000 students and has a strong research output, particularly in HIV/AIDS research, astronomy (via the South African Astronomical Observatory partnership), and African studies.
