The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is a public university located on the Atlantic coast of the Central Region of Ghana, about 165 km west of Accra. It was founded in 1962 as a University College specifically to train graduate teachers for secondary schools and teacher-training colleges. UCC gained full university status in 1971. It now has five colleges: Education Studies, Humanities and Legal Studies, Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, and Distance Education. Despite expansion, teacher education remains a core part of UCCs identity.
