Makerere University is Uganda's oldest and largest public university, established in 1922 as a technical school and elevated to university status in 1970. Located on Makerere Hill in Kampala, it has been called "the Harvard of Africa" and was the intellectual heart of East Africa during the 20th century. Makerere has nine colleges and schools covering medicine, agriculture, technology, social sciences, law, education, business and arts. It enrols approximately 36,000 students. Distinguished alumni include presidents Milton Obote, Mwai Kibaki and Benjamin Mkapa, as well as writers Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o and Paul Theroux. The university's Infectious Diseases Institute is a leading HIV/AIDS research centre in Africa.
