The judiciary of Ghana is the body of judges and magistrates who interpret the laws of Ghana. The judicial system is established by the 1992 Constitution and is headed by the Chief Justice. The Superior Courts of Judicature consist of the Supreme Court (the apex court), the Court of Appeal and the High Court. Below them are the Lower Courts: Circuit Courts, District Courts and Juvenile Courts. Traditional courts, presided over by chiefs, deal with matters of customary law but cannot impose criminal penalties. Independence of the judiciary is guaranteed under Article 125 of the Constitution.
