Birth registration is the official recording of a childs birth by a government agency. The birth certificate that results is a permanent legal record of the childs existence and is required for many entitlements, including school enrolment, passport application and national identification. In Ghana, births should be registered with the Births and Deaths Registry within 21 days of the birth. Late registrations are permitted but typically attract a fee. Information recorded includes the childs full name, date and place of birth, the parents names, and the registration district.
