The Ashanti Empire (Asante Empire) was an Akan empire and kingdom in what is now modern-day Ghana that existed from 1701 until 1957. It was founded by Osei Tutu and his adviser Okomfo Anokye. The empire grew through control of the gold trade and expanded militarily across much of present-day Ghana. The Golden Stool, said to descend from the sky, became the symbol of the Ashanti nations soul. The Ashanti fought a series of wars against the British between 1824 and 1900 (the Anglo-Ashanti wars). After 1900 Ashanti was incorporated into the Gold Coast colony; the kingdom continues today as a major cultural institution led by the Asantehene.
