Asanteman (also Ashanti Kingdom or Asante Confederacy) is a pre-colonial Akan state that emerged in the late 17th century in what is today Ghana. Founded under the leadership of Osei Tutu I and the priest Okomfo Anokye, it became one of the most powerful West African states in the 18th and 19th centuries. After British colonisation Asanteman was formally restored as a traditional institution in 1935. Today the Asanteman Council is the highest traditional authority of the Ashanti people, presided over by the Asantehene, and includes the paramount chiefs (Amanhene) of the Ashanti towns. It arbitrates major chieftaincy and customary-law matters in Ashanti.
