The Asantehene is the title of the king of the Ashanti people of Ghana and head of the Asanteman (Ashanti Kingdom). The Asantehene is enstooled on the Sika Dwa Kofi (Golden Stool), which according to Ashanti tradition was conjured from the sky by the priest Okomfo Anokye in the late 17th century and contains the soul of the Asante nation. The current Asantehene is Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, enstooled on 26 April 1999. The role today is constitutional and ceremonial - traditional authority over Ashanti land, customs and chieftaincy disputes - alongside the parallel modern democratic state.
