Addis Ababa University (AAU) is Ethiopia's oldest and most prestigious university, founded in 1950 as the University College of Addis Ababa. The main campus — known as Sidist Kilo — is in the centre of Addis Ababa. AAU has 14 colleges, faculties and institutes, including the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture and the College of Natural and Computational Sciences. It enrols approximately 50,000 students. AAU hosts the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, which holds an important collection of Ethiopian manuscripts and cultural artefacts. The university is a leading centre for Ethiopic script digitisation and Amharic NLP research.
